Although it’s great to bring an event like the 2010 World Cup to South Africa, bringing money into a country that really needs it, you have to admit, albeit grudgingly, that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea. Sure, South Africans love football and the place is alive with cultures and vitality – but the structure of the country is set in rubber, rather than cement.
At the Paraguay and Italy match, organisers of the World Cup were furious to hear that security guards and event security had left their posts and had also clashed with riot police in a wages dispute. Now, the police force has had to take the place of the security guards at Durban and Cape Town and things are looking fragile at best.
