2009 saw a quarter of the world’s population logging on to the internet – a figure that is only set to rise in the years to come. With the rise in internet users comes a rise in cybercrime – be it viruses, hacking, piracy or cyber-terrorism to name but a few. A recent study conducted by the University of Leicester’s Department of Criminology has found that police forces may not take cyber crime as seriously as they should. Whether this is down to geographical locations and jurisdictions or lack of online knowledge is uncertain. What’s clear though is that with the amount of cyber crime, internet policing needs to become a priority.
