As 2012 gets well under way according to informationweek.com this year is set to hold an even greater threat towards businesses when it comes to cyber attacks.

Last year featured what seemed like wave after wave of malware and hacking incidences which resulted in exploiting private data from some of the most well-known tech companies such as Sony.

One of the biggest trends set for this year on the cyber attacking scene is set to be ‘Breaches’ according to information week.com. With the sheer amount of attacks we saw last year businesses have now accepted that they will probably at some point fall victim to hacking and that it’s a case of ‘when’ not ‘if’.

So the option for 2012 is to not only maintain a killer defence system but to also have all of the right technological practices in place so that should an attack occur your business can quickly detect when a breach has happened.

In a recent report Alan Brill, Senior Managing Director of the cyber security and information assurance division at Kroll said, “We frequently see organisations with protective measures based on the assumption that they are not a target. Yet 2011 taught us that no one is exempt from attack.”

So if you want to ensure you’ve got all the virtual security in place that you need should you fall victim to a cyber attack then get in touch with Churchill Security today. Our ethical hacking service will ensure that you’re as prepared as you can be when it comes to protecting that all important data.

Featuring at the top of the agenda at this month’s Party Conference in Manchester was the question of cohesion and how the private security can help during periods of cutbacks and reform. Chairman of the Association’s Police and Public Services Section, Robbie Calder, summarised in-part by outlining the ways in which bespoke security services such as mobile patrols, alarm response and remotely monitored CCTV ‘can be of great assistance by alleviating the pressure on the police to cut costs while maintaining an excellent level of service to local communities’.

Notable attendees included outspoken proponent for the use of CCTV within public and corporate domains, Philip Davies MP, Lord Sheikh, who fosters a particular interest in data regulation and identity protection, and Theresa May, whose speech emphasised the importance of using private security as a means of freeing up resources. This new initiative aims to help grant local authorities the capacity to streamline current operating policies, thereby disassociating police forces from those images of desk-bound bobbies currently blighting the industry. With this in mind, now appears to be the ideal opportunity to consider the integration of security systems and services and how they can be put to use beyond their traditional application.

Stealthy scammers have come up with yet another strategy which means that fraudsters can rob our money without us even realising.

The new plan of attack allows access to our funds by thieves using SMS banking authentication processes to authorise payments going out of the account.

The malware steals the victim’s online banking details, which makes it possible for the crooks to access bank accounts without the knowledge of the victim, and doesn’t alert any fraud detection procedures that the bank may have in place.

In the second stage of the process, the fraudsters change the victim’s mobile phone number which is kept on record at the bank. And usually the bank will send an authentication code to the previous number, which was registered before the changes were made. However this can be overcome by the crooks using social engineering techniques.

A fraudulent page is injected into the victim’s computer browser which appears to be from their online banking application which tells them that there’s now a new security system which has been introduced by the bank which they need to register for.

This new “security process” tells the customer that they will “be assigned a unique telephone number and that they will receive a special SIM card via mail.”

The victim is then asked to enter the confirmation code that the bank has sent to their phone and there you go, the scammers can now use this to verify the number change they have already carried out.

So the new number which has now been confirmed with the bank, means that the thieves can make any transaction they like and verify them via SMS, which won’t flag up any fraud as the bank believes it to be authorised.

So make sure you don’t fall victim to savvy scammers and stay protected with Churchill Security offering not only physical security but IT security solutions to ensure your businesses valuable data is safe.

The Q1 Labs will be integrated into its newly formed security systems division, which also includes technology from other units including Tivoli, Rational and Information Management security software.

“Q1 Labs’ security analytics will add greater intelligence to IBM’s security portfolio and continue to distinguish IBM from competitors,” said Brendan Hannigan, the former Q1 Labs chief executive, who will be heading the operation.

But it’s not just IBM who are noting the importance of security, computing firm Intel and McAfee also announced a security and event management acquisition, with a deal for NitroSecurity. Plus HP paid a massive £970m for ArcSight last year, another maker of security and event management tools.

So if you think you need to follow in the footsteps of the giants, and boost your IT security then Churchill Security have the solution for you.
A demonstration posted on mobile security blog Kaotic Neutral last week by researcher Augusto Pereyra showed how a practical attack would link a malicious QR tag to an internet-based server.

He said similar attacks could be used to target vulnerable mobile devices that scan QR tags.

The postage-stamp sized, matrix style barcodes are easily generated and placed as stickers over legitimate QR tags for both small and large-scale attacks on personal and financial identity.

Using such a simple process means cyber criminals skilled at spear phishing and other advanced forms of cyber-attack, can then use their own malicious QR tag to phish or pharm the unsuspecting smartphone user.

So make sure your business has the best protection in place with Churchill Security with our range of IT security and ethical hacking services you can keep pesky cyber-criminals at bay.

The attackers targeted NetNames and Ascio, two firms that provide Domain Name System (DNS) services, which connect the addresses users type into their web browsers with websites, by converting them into machine-readable code.

Although the security of their own systems was not breached, at least seven high-profile websites were hijacked when the hackers replaced NetNames’ and Ascio’s DNS with their own, enabling them to divert traffic. Some visitors to The Telegraph, Acer, Betfair, National Geographic, The Register, UPS and Vodafone were all presented with the same page claiming credit but then all appeared to have returned to normal overnight.

TurkGuvenligi who have claimed credit for dozens of similar ‘defacement’ attacks since 2008, declared on their webpage: “We TurkGuvenligi declare this day as World Hackers’ Day – Have fun .” So if you don’t fancy playing with hackers then ensure you’ve got the best IT security for your business with Churchill Security.

Industry analysts Gartner are warning companies to up the game and not blame the source of the attack but remove their vulnerability to such attacks. Gartner estimates that in the average organisation four to eight per cent of files that pass through antivirus and other common defences are malicious.

Advanced security threats, such as targeted attacks, are increasing so it’s even more necessary to have a robust defence system in place. John Pescatore, Vice President Analyst at Gartner said, “Organisations need to focus on reducing vulnerabilities and increasing monitoring capabilities to deter or more quickly react to evolving threats,” Targeted attacks are penetrating standard levels of security controls and causing significant business damage to organisations that do not evolve their security controls.

So businesses need to reduce the vulnerability with Gartner urging companies to focus on security which sometimes comes second place to compliance and customer satisfaction. “The use of specialised threat detection, network technologies can be very effective in quickly detecting and reacting to the first stages of an advanced targeted threat, but require high levels of skilled resources to be effective.” Pescatore said.
